Experimenting with paint.

Thanks to Larry Moore and "What if University",  artists are having direction and assignments.  This has been fun during our time of staying in and staying safe from the corona virus.  Many things to think about.  Paint with less information but still readable.  Use value, color, edge, line & mark making, pattern & rest, divisions of space, shape, and scale.  The first drawing all about lines lead to these other paintings.

Palette Knife

I made a collage of sunset photographs that I took at various beaches in South Carolina.  I have used that photograph three times to make abstract paintings.  Each painting comes out completely different.  Using the palette knife is so freeing.  My husband wanted me to name this painting "Atlantis" because it looks like the fictional island of Atlantis to him.

I took a photo in Germany while driving along farmland with windmills in the background and I saw this row of trees.  This scene just stuck me.  I loved how the one tree stood alone among all the other trees.  Sometimes as a transplant from California this is how I feel.  I wanted to make this lone tree shine a little brighter next to the other trees.

One of my goals for September is painting things I fear.  The other thing I wanted to do on the same vane is use photographs that I like but I didn't know how to paint them or maybe they were too difficult of a scene.  In honor of starting my 30 day challenge I used this photo.  I love the photo with a lot of beautiful leaves in the background and a beautiful branch of red leaves in the front.  I decided to take a chance and paint all the colors that I saw in the background and leave out the branch going across the foreground.  This was completely done with a palette know so the colors wouldn't get muddy with applying so much paint.

A new take on painting of a few years ago.  It was a square 30" x 30".  I wanted to see how it would be in a small size.  Usually an abstract looks better large. I think the colors let it work in the small version also.

I was in a painting slump for a few months.  I couldn't get inspired even though I was still plein air painting once a week.  I had some beautiful beach and marsh photos that I took in South Carolina in February and painted a couple of nice paintings from them.  After that I couldn't get motivated.  I went back to Pawley's Island in June and had a wonderful time painting on the Causeway.  It was so peaceful and beautiful.  After I that I was rejuvenated from the short trip to the beach.  I have been painting like crazy ever since.  I had this abstract painting that was unfinished.  I started with alcohol ink and poured it all over the canvas than I painted it with clear gesso.  I then painted it was oil paint.  I didn't finish it.  I finished it today with a lots more oil paint which was applied with palette knives.  It is bright and I think beautiful.

I painted this for my daughter.  She was on vacation in San Diego and went kayaking and snorkeling in this beautiful place.  The colors are just a little more saturated than the photo.  My daughter moved into her new apartment yesterday.  This one is for you sweetheart.

"Twilight"

This painting was started with alcohol ink on canvas.  I let it dry and applied clear gesso.  I used this painting as a demo for Mint Hill Arts in which I added oil paint.   I previously posted the result of the end of the demo.  Since then I have worked on the piece with a palette knife it give it more texture.  I mixed gold foil with cold wax to add some sparkle to the sand.  See close up below.

"Spring is in the Air"

This is a great weekend for buying art.  Charlotte Country Day School has their "Big Saturday" Art Sale in the library at Fairview and Carmel Roads in Charlotte. I set up my art there yesterday and people started shopping today.  I know many of the artists and I can say with all honesty that the artwork is beautiful.  The sale ends Saturday at 4:00 pm.

"Afternoon Abstract" Sold

I started working on this painting before I painted the 30 paintings in 30 days.  Those paintings were all 4"x 4", 6" x 6", or 8" x 8".  This painting is much larger at 30" x 40".  I started with a gallery wrapped canvas, then used alcohol ink to make the shapes and colors I desired.  Then a layer of clear gesso.  After that plenty of oil paint with brushes and palette knifes.

Marsh Series #9

This painting started with alcohol ink to get the depth in the color and the random pooling.  I painted clear gesso on top to seal it before I starting painting with oils.  I wanted to keep the loose feeling and the interesting colors of the inks and oils combined.  Size:  18" x 24"  unframed.  Price:  $450

Marsh Series #8

This is 10" x 10"canvas that I finished today.  I started with a cool background and warmed it up as I went forward in the painting.  The colors you can premix and use with a palette knife are amazing.  All but one of the low country paintings were done with images that I took at Pawley's Island.
