Day 22 "Getting Ready for Christmas"

30 Paintings in 30 days
Day 22 "Getting Ready for Christmas"
8" x 10"
oil on canvas panel

Merry Christmas.  Today is a first day of Fall which means Christmas is around the corner.  This was an on line lesson with Leslie Saeta.  This was a double gift.  I won free lessons in 2015 but it included three lesson from 2014.  I didn't get the three lessons in 2014 right away so I forgot about them.  I checked back much later and there they were.  This is the last of the lessons.  I thought this would be a fun one for one of my 30 day paintings.  This was done with a palette knife.  It was hard to make the round shapes with the palette knife and my colors didn't quite look like Leslie's.  I am challenging myself each of the 30 days to do something difficult or scary or something I need to improve on.  So here are my box of Christmas ornaments.

After a recent visit to Pawleys, I was inspired to paint some marshes again.  I also just finished reading the book "Pawleys Island"  Dorothea Benton Frank who write about all the areas surrounding Charleston, SC.  I felt filled with the island spirit.

This Low-Country painting was from two photographs that I liked.  I added a little color to make it different of other of my low-country paintings,  I have taken a hundred or more marsh photos.  It is one of my favorite subjects to paint.  With a palette knife, I added lots of paint to give it lots of texture.

I have presented this painted before on my blog.  Now you may purchase it through my blog.  I love to visit Pawley's Island in South Carolina.  I paint the marsh scenes in their year round splendor.  The colors of the marsh are always different.  It changes with the season, direction of the sun, and ebb and flow of the tide.  The marsh is teeming with life and a constant wonder.

Golden Marsh

"Golden Marsh"
18" x 36"
oil on gallery wrapped canvas
$725

I have been working on this painting for a month.  I painted the first layer quickly and the next few layers, I took my time with.  I used a palette knife for most of it.  I wanted to get the blue of the water right and the golden grasses the right color to capture a marsh on a bright, sunny, and windy February.

This painting will be for sale along with many others of my paintings at Charlotte Country Day School, April 14-16.  The times are 8 am to 4 pm Thursday and Friday.  Big Saturday will be 10 am to 4 pm.

Here is the mate to yesterday's painting.  Another Cape Cod marsh scene.  I usually tone the canvas before I paint, but I toned this one with orange and let a little of it show through.  As I paint my days from my vacation in New England and Canada, I relive being there and the bright sunny Fall days.

"Sunny Day in Napa"

30 in 30
Day 30
I miss these golden hills of California with the black oaks nestled into its crevices.  This is the last day of our daily paintings with Leslie Saeta.  I felt such a connection with all the artists doing this challenge.
I have learned that each day you get better and faster from painting daily.  There were a few days that  I was rushed and did not like the results.  My favorite paintings are the ones I spent time planning the layout.  I did learn to have all my colors mixed before I started the painting.  These small  pieces of art can be studies for much larger paintings.  Tomorrow I will be back to work on a 30" x 40" painting I started before the challenge.  Thank you Leslie for this New Year's challenge.
