Two Blue Herons

I had a request to paint another Blue Heron.  The first one went to Germany and the second one will go to Cape Cod.  I had to paint from a photograph of the painting so they are both very different.  The top one is a total side view where the other is slightly turned.  Which one to you like?

Day 12 "Foggy Marsh"

Day 12 of Strada Easel 30 Day Challenge
"Foggy Marsh"
18" x 24"
$525
oil on canvas
Palette Knife
I took a challenge from one of my Plein Airies friends to take an old canvas and make it into an abstract.  I choose a bright abstract piece and changed the whole look of it.  I used only three colors.  I used manganese violet, viridian green, and cad orange to make all the colors you see.  If was so much fun to try something so different.  I also used a palette knife and liquin impasto.

The top painting was painted from a photo that I took at Huntington State Beach Park in South Carolina.  I was standing in a spot where I could see the ocean, sand dunes, and the marsh on a very hot day in August.
The one below was painted from a photo that I took in Germany.  It is the Moselle River with the vineyards growing on the sides of the hills.  This was a great driving trip but it is also great for bicycles riding along the river.

After a recent visit to Pawleys, I was inspired to paint some marshes again.  I also just finished reading the book "Pawleys Island"  Dorothea Benton Frank who write about all the areas surrounding Charleston, SC.  I felt filled with the island spirit.

Abstract Marsh

"Abstract Marsh "
18" x 24"
mixed media on canvas
$525
I was in a painting slump for a few months.  I couldn't get inspired even though I was still plein air painting once a week.  I had some beautiful beach and marsh photos that I took in South Carolina in February and painted a couple of nice paintings from them.  After that I couldn't get motivated.  I went back to Pawley's Island in June and had a wonderful time painting on the Causeway.  It was so peaceful and beautiful.  After I that I was rejuvenated from the short trip to the beach.  I have been painting like crazy ever since.  I had this abstract painting that was unfinished.  I started with alcohol ink and poured it all over the canvas than I painted it with clear gesso.  I then painted it was oil paint.  I didn't finish it.  I finished it today with a lots more oil paint which was applied with palette knives.  It is bright and I think beautiful.

"Bay Marsh"

"Bay Marsh"
30" x 30"
Oil on gallery wrapped canvas
palette knife
$650

I went on a two day tour of Cape Cod.  The blues of the sky and water were so brilliant.  The water is a very deep blue and the sky very clear.  I put a little red in the background trees to show that some of the trees were starting to turn.

Day 18 "Red Roof"

Day 18 ~ 30 paintings in 30 days
"Red Roof"
oil on canvas panel
6" x 8"

On Pawley's Island, the marsh front properties have a docks leading out into the marsh with  a little "boat/fishing hut" at the end.  They line up like boats in a harbor.  I isolated this one with a red roof for this painting and called "Red Roof"

Marsh Series #9

This painting started with alcohol ink to get the depth in the color and the random pooling.  I painted clear gesso on top to seal it before I starting painting with oils.  I wanted to keep the loose feeling and the interesting colors of the inks and oils combined.  Size:  18" x 24"  unframed.  Price:  $450
