"Tides In"
8" x 10"

Another scene from Folly Beach Marsh.  I was waiting for two days to see the tide come in the marsh.  It was worth the wait.  The water just glistened through the golden marshy grass.  See this and more at Christ Church.

A Touch of Gold

A Touch of Gold
8" x 10"
oil on canvas
Palette knife painting
Adding one more to my low country paintings with a palette knife.  The easiest way for me to paint loosely is with a palette knife.  The colors seem crisper and more vivid with my palette knife.  I look forward to doing more thickly textured palette knife paintings.

Beach Scenes

I've been busy with my palette knife.  I went back to my former style of painting marshes.  I think I get more depth and color with a palette knife.  I'm taking these to the South Caroline beach to hang in two galleries.

After a recent visit to Pawleys, I was inspired to paint some marshes again.  I also just finished reading the book "Pawleys Island"  Dorothea Benton Frank who write about all the areas surrounding Charleston, SC.  I felt filled with the island spirit.

Colors of Low-Country

Colors of Low-Country
18" x 24"
$525
Palette knife on Canvas
Oil

This Low-Country painting was from two photographs that I liked.  I added a little color to make it different of other of my low-country paintings,  I have taken a hundred or more marsh photos.  It is one of my favorite subjects to paint.  With a palette knife, I added lots of paint to give it lots of texture.

"Winter Marsh"

"Winter Marsh"
30" x 30"
Oil on gallery wrapped canvas
$600

My last trip to the low country was last month with warm and sunny days a couple of rainy grey days.  The marshes were golden brown and some green just starting to come through as it was getting ready for spring.
I'll be taking this painting to Charlotte Country Day School on the 15th of April.  CCDS will  hold it's annual art sale in Cannon Library starting the 16th and ending on Saturday the 18th.  I will have more art for sale and note cards also.

Day 14 "Isle of Palm"

Day 14 ~ 30 paintings in 30 days
"Isle of Palm"
8" x 10"
oil on canvas panel
$95

This spring, summer, and fall, I spent several weekends at the beaches in South Carolina.  I was in Isle of Palm for a birthday party, Litchfield by the Sea, and several times to Pawley's Island and Debordieu.  Every trip I made sure that I took plenty of reference photos for future paintings.  The marsh of full of life.  One day as I was plein air painting, several young boys were having the time of the lives catching crabs with the fishing nets.  The marshes, like the sea are always changing.

"Low-country in Spring"

"Low-country in Spring"

I enjoy taking photos around Pawley's Island in the Spring or Summer.  The scene will change depending of the time of year and time of day.  Watch for more marsh paintings throughout the summer.

"Low Country Marsh"

I looked a this palette knife painting for a week and decided to brighten up the green and change the design slightly.  It is easy to paint with a palette knife when the painting is still wet but when it drys it doesn't react the same way.  I had to mix several new paint piles so the I could get the feeling of the marsh grasses growing into each other.

Marsh Series #8

This is 10" x 10"canvas that I finished today.  I started with a cool background and warmed it up as I went forward in the painting.  The colors you can premix and use with a palette knife are amazing.  All but one of the low country paintings were done with images that I took at Pawley's Island.
