One of my goals for September is painting things I fear.  The other thing I wanted to do on the same vane is use photographs that I like but I didn't know how to paint them or maybe they were too difficult of a scene.  In honor of starting my 30 day challenge I used this photo.  I love the photo with a lot of beautiful leaves in the background and a beautiful branch of red leaves in the front.  I decided to take a chance and paint all the colors that I saw in the background and leave out the branch going across the foreground.  This was completely done with a palette know so the colors wouldn't get muddy with applying so much paint.

You can find the original Mast General Sore in Valle Crucis, North Carolina.  It originally opened in 1883.  My daughter went to Appalachian State not far from there.  My husband and I had fun exploring the small towns with tourist attractions in the North Carolina Mountains.

This window intrigued me because of the age and all the decals.

"Glowing Egg"

Day 26

Yesterday's egg was soft and delicate; so I wanted this one be dramatic.  The egg is sitting on glass with a light glowing through the egg.  Sometimes this 4" x 4" take longer than the larger panels.

This bowl is from last year's "Empty Bowl" luncheon.  It was fun to use another empty for today's still life.  Who knows maybe tomorrow I will use another bowl from my collection.

A friend of mine invited me to the "Empty Bowl" luncheon that benefits Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina. Each year we pick out a bowl that the local potters have donated to the cause.  I have a beautiful collection of green bowls that help me remember that some people have empty bowls.  This is a palette knife and brush painting on a 8" x 8" panel of my favorite green bowl.

My daughter made dinner for us last night: ricotta stuffed chicken breast with red bell pepper sauce.  It was delicious! She was kind enough to let me take one of her peppers for my still life.

"Honeycrisps"

Day 11

The honeycrisps apples from Canada are as juicy and crisp as their name.  I painted this as a companion piece to the orange slices.  This was painted also with a palette knife on a 8" x 8" panel.  The thirty day painting challenge also makes it a thirty day blog challenge.  I started a 30" x 40" painting yesterday as a painting to do slowly.

Day 8

My last 4" x 4" panel with a palette knife.  The larger panels are easier to paint with a palette knife.  This is a wonderful exercise to do everyday.  I love this challenge.

Day 5

Another 4" x 4" palette knife painting.  This little painting makes me crave gin and tonic and ceviche.  I guess I am looking forward to summer already.

Colors of Pawley's Island

Happy New Year to all.  I ended my marsh series last month but I could not resist doing another one to enter into the WPSE show coming up in a few days.  This palette knife painting was done on a 10" x 10" gallery wrapped canvas.  Tomorrow I will start 30 days of painting along with others painter to put on Leslie Saeta's blog.  I wish everyone a wonderful 2013.

Marsh Series #8

This is 10" x 10"canvas that I finished today.  I started with a cool background and warmed it up as I went forward in the painting.  The colors you can premix and use with a palette knife are amazing.  All but one of the low country paintings were done with images that I took at Pawley's Island.
