Experimenting with paint.

Thanks to Larry Moore and "What if University",  artists are having direction and assignments.  This has been fun during our time of staying in and staying safe from the corona virus.  Many things to think about.  Paint with less information but still readable.  Use value, color, edge, line & mark making, pattern & rest, divisions of space, shape, and scale.  The first drawing all about lines lead to these other paintings.

Blue Skies

"Blue Skies"
8" x 10"
Oil on canvas panel
unframed $125

This is a place that  I have painted often but for a change I painted it in my studio from a photograph.  It was very cozy inside and the last couple of weeks has been full of snow flurries and tornado warnings.  I flipped this photo to change it even more.  When painting outdoors I have a smaller palette to work with and changing weather and light conditions to challenge me.

"Standing Alone"

"Standing Alone"
8" x 10"
oil on canvas
I took a photo in Germany while driving along farmland with windmills in the background and I saw this row of trees.  This scene just stuck me.  I loved how the one tree stood alone among all the other trees.  Sometimes as a transplant from California this is how I feel.  I wanted to make this lone tree shine a little brighter next to the other trees.

Day 17 "Resting"

30 Painting in 30 Days
Day 17
"Resting"
8" x 8"
oil on canvas panel

I wonder if this man resting on the stone bench was walking for a while on the Camino de Santiago or just enjoying the view before going to town.
I had two semesters of drawing and four semesters of figure drawing but it has been awhile since I have done any figures.  It is hard to draw this small figure in the painting.  But I think by adding figure to a landscape, it tells a different story.

Day 15 "Rock Wall"

30 Paintings in 30 Days
Day 15
Oil on canvas panel
10" x 8"

Half way there in my 30 day challenge.  This is a plein air piece painted in Providence  Presbyterian Church's cemetery.  At one time not long ago this rock wall was in disrepair.  The church hired an expert to rebuild it.  Volunteers were needed and were trained on how to build a rock wall.  Behind the rock wall is the slave cemetery and the spring where the native Americans watered their horses and the where first settlers camped.  Providence Presbyterian is celebrating its birthday of 250 years.

Day 8 "Broken Fence"

30 Paintings in 30 Days
Day 8
"Broken Fence"
8" x 10"
oil on canvas panel

I took this photo years ago in British Columbia.  I thought I might paint it someday but wasn't sure if I could paint it as beautiful as the photo.  This challenge for me was depth and color.  I love the yellow green foreground against the purple middle ground.

"Trees on Fire" Sold

I sautrated the colors of this photograph of trees in photoshop.  I painted it with these bright colors which made the trees pop.  I am thrilled to say that I sold this today at Teena's Art Gallery at 110 South Ames Street in Matthews.
